Senior Director, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging – Equinix
In your opinion, what qualities make a “Moves Mentor”?
A “Moves Mentor” recognizes the power of their privilege, talent, and joy. They use this power to uplift and empower others to reach their full potential. By sharing their knowledge and experiences, a Moves Mentor inspires others to become their best selves. They know the transformative power of mentorship.
How does mentoring benefit the mentor? Career-wise? Intellectually? Spiritually? Socially? Any other “-allys”?
Mentoring benefits both parties by providing new perspectives and challenging assumptions. As a mentor, I have seen new opportunities through articulating concepts that I may have taken for granted. The ongoing exchange of ideas and knowledge fosters a spirit of collaboration and innovation, creating a brighter future for all.
Should mentorship be a company requirement or a personal give-back?
Both! Mentorship benefits individuals and companies. By making mentorship a priority, we can all contribute to the growth and development of ourselves, our colleagues, and our organizations, ultimately leading to greater success. By embracing mentorship across all communities, we create a more equitable and supportive organization that values and celebrates diversity.
What is your mentorship method? Do you prefer a more hands-on or laid back approach?
As a mentor, I believe in fostering an environment that is supportive and empowering. It is essential for mentees to feel safe and valued in order to take risks and grow. My goal is to help individuals identify their strengths and how they can uniquely bring value to the organization. Looking at those factors together unlocks new opportunities.
“In the nineteenth century, the central moral challenge was slavery. In the twentieth century, it was the battle against totalitarianism… in the 21st is century the paramount moral challenge will be the struggle for fairness and gender equality around the world.” * Why is gender equality even a challenge, especially in the ‘enlightened’ western world? What do you believe is at the root of this fierce resistance to female influence within society?” don’t have an answer for this one yet.
Was there a defining moment or experience in your life that led you to where you are today? What was it?
Attending Dr. Lynne Hurdle’s “On The Matter of Race” courses was a defining experience that led me to where I am today. It opened my eyes to dismantling systemic racism. We need to realize the potential that has been lost due to inequities in the workplace. As a leader, I am passionate about creating diverse and inclusive environments where everyone can thrive.
How does diversity play into mentorship?
Diversity plays a vital role in mentorship. Mentoring individuals who share marginalized identities provides representation and empowerment. Mentoring those who hold different marginalized identities allows us to use our privilege to advocate and create new opportunities while also expanding our perspectives. I recognize the unique challenges others face and am committed to being a guide and support along their path.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
My grandmother quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson, “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” She was always looking for a better way. Her advice encouraged me to be open-minded, flexible, and willing to adapt to new situations and ideas. Intellectual growth and progress require the willingness to challenge one’s assumptions and beliefs, and to be open to change.
What would you say to yourself if you could go back in time 15 years?
Shine the light on others and it comes back tenfold. Bring love into everything you do – even at work. Time goes faster than you think it will. Be, really be, with your family, your daughters, and your friends. Nothing will be more important than that.
Who do you most admire? Why?
I really admire Kristen Kish, who I lovingly call Kish, for making me do things like this when I really prefer to be in the background! She inspires me with her words and ideas. She brings loving kindness to life on our team and at Equinix.
